2pt win Kado de Joie, 3.15 Wincanton
2pt win Oh My Johnny, 3.35 Sandown
Recommend backing both horses when BOG (Best Odds Guaranteed) is available on Saturday morning.
The two selections for Saturday are both owned by very successful syndicates, which does little for the prices, but when the market moves, you can be confident that the horses carry plenty of stable support.
In the case of Oh My Johnny, this 5-year-old has also been strongly advised by two of the most successful online tipsters, which resulted in the early price dropping from 8/1 into 11/4. That is too short, and I expect the price to drift to around 4/1 at the off.
The gelding has fallen twice from just four outings, but the mistakes were clumsy rather than indicative of any significant lack of technique. This has led to the horse being rated off a mark of just 116.
Gentleman Bill, who Oh My Johnny would have beaten with ease but for a final-flight fall, is now rated 123, and it is reasonable to assume that the Hobbs/White combination could rate 130+ with normal progress.
The stable is in great form, and, weather permitting, Oh My Johnny can give the syndicate, organised by former champion jockey Richard Johnson, a high-profile Saturday success live on TV.
The same pattern can be followed 20 minutes earlier by the Noel Fehily syndicate-owned Kado de Joie, another horse already backed into 9/4.
This 5-year-old has made rapid progress this season. He will be ridden cold by James Bowen and produced with a late run. Last time out, he won a competitive race at Lingfield Park with any amount in hand, in a race where the form is starting to work out very well.
This form will be tested earlier in the day at 1.15 at Sandown, when the Ben Pauling-trained runner-up, Fine Casting, contests the 2m4f hurdle. I have considered this as a bet; however, the Nicky Henderson-trained Doddiethegreat looks to have an outstanding chance. I am sure that Kado de Joie could win this race, which is valued almost the same as the Wincanton event.
Doddiethegreat, although his last run can be ignored, has become something of an enigma, and part of our process is not to get involved with these types. I will let it run but don’t want to back against it.
Kado de Joie is top of my list of horses to follow. The form of his Lingfield victory and running style strongly suggests he can win off marks in excess of 130+, which gives him a minimum of 11lb in hand at Wincanton.
Clondaw Royale, beaten 17 lengths at Lingfield, came out and landed a gamble at Haydock, beating Schalke, who had previously been behind our New Year’s Day gamble, Strackan. The third-placed Followango was very unlucky to get beaten on bottomless ground at Ffos Las.
A fascinating day lies ahead, provided the weather permits, and a great opportunity to extend our 2025 record to 4 from 4.
