The Sydney Banks Hurdle has thrown up some classy winners in the past , although only older readers will remember probably the best of them the 1976 winner Grand Canyon who won in imperious fashion on his way to becoming a top notch chaser, whose front running, bold jumping style captured the imagination of the race going public.
Last years winner Handstands has the makings of a 160 chaser and I expect Jax Junior to also make his mark here as a potential high quality future chaser, by taking this listed hurdle on Thursday.
Lucy Wadham has had a fantastic campaign, but with horses from the leading yards of Henderson, Murphy and Pauling providing the main opposition i think we will get a price of around 6/4. If either of those three were training the 6yo he would surely be odds on, given the ease of his Ascot win last time out.
That day he took the lead and trounced a couple of 120 plus rated horses with ease. It marked him down as a horse with a big future and I expect Tom Cannon to apply similar tactics in a race which on paper is a step up from Ascot but in reality it looks likely, that he will only need to reproduce that form to win with a bit in hand
