The leading yards of Venetia Williams and Phillip Hobbs and Johnson White have both gone to Hereford to give a couple of horses that look potentially 125 rated horses the opportunity to win races rated 0-100 in the case of Simple Getaway and 0-120 for Oh So Johnny.
Many very good judges invested heavily in Oh So Johnny winning a Class 2 Saturday handicap at Sandown before it was abandoned.
He then went to Haydock for a Class 3 – sent off 11/8 favourite and like many before was unsuited by running on Soft ground at a track.
That mark of 116 was considered low enough for the horse to win a grade 2 or 3 hurdle and in both the Sandown and Haydock races was punted into around 6/4. Which is the same price we will get in this class 4 handicap at Hereford on Wednesday.
I don’t personally like to back at prices less than 2/1 and therefore I am going to back Oh So Johnny with Simple Getaway in the 2.18 Hereford.
This will be close to even money which in a 10 runner handicap chase looks skinny. However, this will be the last time this horse will run in this grade. He has been officially raised 4lb for his second at Ludlow when we backed him at 4/1( he went off 5/2) but can run on Wednesday off his old mark of 100. He should have won easily that day but Charlie was so confident, he fell asleep half way through the race, and failed to peg back the front running winner.
I fully expect this to be a Venetia trained chaser that moves through the grades and ends up rated 120-125 running in grade 3 handicaps.
There is the danger that this race may come to soon but he has so much in hand of these exposed very poor rivals that even if he not at his best he should still win.
