Trust ‘The Company Sergeant’ to boss Plate

Gavin Cromwell looks set to have a good day at Cheltenham on Thursday with Sixandahalf looking to have a great chance in the Mares Novice that opens the card and with the Thecompanysergent who can win the Plate at 4.40.

The 8yo runs only for the second time for the brilliant Irish trainer, running initially over hurdles when finishing 3rd in a decent Navan Hurdle in January.

He had previously combined fencing with hurdling under his previous trainer, showing a good level of form and capacity to jump fence well earning a decent mark of 136.

Significantly, Cromwell has not raced the horse since, preserving that mark and allowing for the English handicapper tax , which he duly got but only 3lb.

Cromwell on one of the early stable tours nominated Thecompanysergeant as one of his best chances for a handicap at the festival. The gelding is ridden by the very useful 5lb claimer Conor Stone-Walsh who partnered the stables Backtonormal to land a monster gamble at the DRF

Jordans from the mighty Joseph O’Brien yard is a danger and Jagwar for the Jonjo O’Neill yard is likely to attract plenty of market support – but this has all the makings of a typical Cromwell handicap chase plot and with all firms offering 5 places he is a rock solid choice at around 8/1

Recommended Bet 1pt EW (5 places) 8/1 Thecompanysergeant 4.40 Cheltenham Thursday
