- Regalian 5.45 Southwell
Regalian won a very weak maiden on debut at Newcastle – he started 2/5 which is very unusual for a Haggas horse first time out. He is well bred.
‘Race ran at slow pace for first 4f, carried head high overcame inexperience pushed along over 2f out, led inside final 1f, drew clear. The finishing time was nothing out of the ordinary.’
He has to give 7lb to some promising rivals including Modern Day from Godolphin who although running in a hood showed equal promise on debut in a much better race and Invincible Duke from the Ralph Beckett yard, although this colt is having its third run and maybe best watched for future handicap purposes.
Regalian has come in for support overnight – do not read too much into this nearly all runners from the yard attract market attention in the early listings.
Nu Bets from the yard will be few and far between at the moment but this horse didn’t show anywhere near enough on debut and is best watched this evening to establish an accurate level of ability.

This is very well bred filly closely related to 5f-6f winner Qaaraat (by Acclamation) and useful 2-y-o 6f winner Dark Lady – half-sister to several winners, including last seasons surprise Lockinge winner Audience.
There is plenty of high class speed in the pedigree and it is no surprise to see her put in as 7/4 favourite in what looks a weak looking maiden for her debut.
However tempting it may seem to get involved – my advise is always not to back any Haggas runner on debut. Of course some win but mostly because of the weakness of the opposition and is never a reflection on what the horse has shown on the gallops.
Haggas are not trained to win on debut – the first run is always educational and the horses are not prepared to be ready first time out and will rarely be shown the whip. If they do win and the form of the race works out you can be fairly certain it is a good horse.
