At the end of March and throughout April 2024 trainer Richard Hughes produced his horses to be ready from the start of the season. In just over 5 weeks 41 of his horses were sent off among the first three in the betting with 20 winning.
This produced a return on investment as follows:
Favourites – 62.14%
2nd favourites – 108.57%
3rd favourites – 138.46%
15 other horses ran that were not in the first 3 market leaders – none of which won. When the money was down the horses delivered.
There is every indication that as we start the same five week period – Hughes is looking to repeat the performance levels of 2024 this year.
During interviews given about his runners earlier this month – he repeatedly stressed that they were being prepared for their main targets later in the Spring.
On Thursday (after writing this ) he has two well backed favourites that i expect to have won won at Wolverhampton and Chelmsford and on Saturday he sends out Whip Cracker who has a good ew chance in the Lincoln, but the one that really grabs my attention is Kamboo who heads for the Queens Prize at Kempton due off at 2.05.
Pitched in the Epsom Derby which unsurprisingly proved beyond him, the 4yo showed a glimpse of what was to come when landing a decent gamble on the AW at Newcastle when running on well to beat todays main rival Who’s Glen by 1/2l over a trip just over 1m4f. Ground conditions went against him for the rest of the season but he is only 4lb higher for that win and meets Who’s Glen on 10lb better terms.
William Buick is a significant jockey booking as he has a 22% strike rate over the last 5 years when riding on the AW for Hughes.
At 3/1 he will definitely be sent off in the first three in the market and could well go off less than 2/1.
Recommended Bet 3pt win Kamboo 2.05 Kempton.3/1
