William Haggas has a strict rule for his jockey’s riding unraced horses on debut. “Don’t use the whip”
That was very noticeable when Keiron Fallon rode the extremely well bred 3yo filly Kinswoman on debut at Wolverhampton 14 days ago.
Sent off the 11/8 favourite she was very unruly at the starting gate and drawn wide pulled her way to the front ranks earlier than Fallon had wanted as he couldn’t get cover. Nevertheless, she was in contention all the way up the straight under the afore mentioned hands and heels riding to be beaten 2l by the winner but only 1L by French Sand who is in the field this afternoon and heads the market at 5/4.
Kinswoman is the 7th foal out of Ladyship the other six are all winners including three rated 105,107 and 123.
Getting her a win on the CV is worth far more than the prize money today and although there are signs in the pedigree that have signs of temperament, that 10/3 is too big to ignore given the high level of improvement normally associated with runners from the yard.
in the 8 runner field today, only Double Rush looks to be a threat to the top 2 and the Charlie Hills yard who had a dreadful 2024 are showing signs of a resurgence.
The Haggas record at Wolverhampton on the AW in March and April is superb with horses in the front 3 of the market with a near 50% win strike rate.
If she had been 5/4 or 6/4 that risk of temperament would err me on the side of caution but that 100/30 on offer makes the risk worth taking.
