I told members earlier in the Spring that the feeling from my contacts was that John and Thady Gosden’s could return to the high level of performance that made the Yard the best in the country in the first 20 years of this century.
Those aspirations were put on hold when their first strongly advised bet of the season went widely astray when Palmarion, who was backed as though defeat was out of the question at Doncaster in March, flopped.
Just three weeks later following a great Craven meeting my contacts are buzzing again and they have what looks a worthy short priced favourite in Fields of Gold in the 2000 Guineas. Only very soft ground would be a worry and the 9/2 and 4/1 available after the Craven didn’t last long. As the field is likely to be whittled away as May3rd approaches i believe he will go off as short as 6/4.
He has every chance of being as good if not better than his 126 rated sire Kingman and it will be very disappointing if he fails to provide Gosden with his first 2,000 Guineas which should have been secured by Kingman in 2011 when James Doyle hit the front too soon and got nabbed by the 40/1 outsider Night of Thunder.
He looks set to be the Champion Miler of 2025.
The 3/1 with Bet 365, Ladbrokes and Corals is too big and has to be taken
With the yard In its current vein of form there is every chance that they can pull off a long term plan to win the AW Mile Championship handicap at 3.00 – Newcastle on Friday with Roi De France.
The 4yo was an eyecatcher when given a prep for this 75,000 race at Kempton over 7f in March. Despite the distance of the race and the forecast pace looking to be totally against the horse, he was sent off 6/4 favourite. This was another occasion when he has attracted support as his potential to win Handicaps before moving onto Group races has long been expected.
He finished 3rd beaten only just over 1L at Kempton despite being unsuited by a slow early pace. On his previous run over a 1m at Kempton he just lost out to the ill fated Poker Face who went onto win a Group 2 race next time out.
As is often the case in racing when things start to go your way , you get the breaks. On Friday he has drawn the plum stands side draw and will get the strong pace he needs.
Fantastic Fox is 100/30 favourite with Bet 365 but 12/1 with other firms following a luckless run in the Lincoln but he could again meet trouble in running as was the case last year in this race when finishing 3rd ridden by Murphy off a 2lb higher mark.
An each way bet is advised on Roi De France as Oisin Murphy will also have to find a pathway through but this has been a long term plan and i expect him to get the job done.
