Sir Lowry’s Pass won at Goodwood on his seasonal debut at a time when Ed Walkers horses were needing their first outing and he went into my notebook as a possible Royal Ascot handicap winner.
That was over 10f but he stayed the trip really well and with a strong pace and slight headwind to face in Mondays Zetland Gold Cup he can take this prestigious prize en route to the Royal meeting.
The handicapper raised him 7lbs for that win to a mark of 94 but that is only 10lb higher than his original handicap mark whereas his main rival Sea that Storm has been put up 15lb from the start of his winning run for Ed Bethall which includes three course and distance wins. However two of those have been in class 4 and his last win was in Class 3 but only a 0-88 beating a small field of mainly Class4 Handicappers.
On the other hand Sir Lowry’s Pass was really impressive at Goodwood winning his Class 2 beating other proven Class 2 handicappers easily by over 2L value for 3 or 4
In behind were Tony Montana who was beaten on the nod up 2lb in a Class 2 York handicap and Mutaawid who down to a Class 3 won by 6L.
Well drawn in Stall 4 and with a strong pace and head wind certain to play to his stamina this looks a really good opportunity for the Ed Walker team who are now in top form following their win in the Temple Stakes on Saturday.
The yard has a 50% strike rate at the track over the past two seasons and they can claim an away win against the locally trained market rival .
