Throughout my decades of punting Bank Holiday Monday’s seem always to be dull, cold, windy and a day when bookies bash the punters!
Monday was no exception with chilly, blustery conditions and the days odds on bankers at all three flat meetings Crown of Oaks at Redcar, Boatswain and Crowd Quake at Leicester and Fitzmaurice at Windsor all blowing out.
Our Main Bet Sir Lowrys Pass was backed in from 3/1 to 2/1 but the North East coast missed the forecast heavy showers and the ground turned firm as a result, which was too much for him to overcome. Given good or softer ground upped in trip to 12f we will get our money back on this improving 4yo.
However there was no damage done on the day as our only other bet Boyne Lady backed from 3/1 to 6/5 just about lasted home to land the gamble.
The Tuesday after the Whitsun holiday has the look in terms of racing as Bank Holiday Part 2 and although there are some interesting novice stakes races especially at Leicester and Wolverhampton, it has the feel of a No Bet Day.
The Haggas yard will be bemused by the performance of Crown of Oaks who ran probably 30lb below what was expected, unfortunately he may turn out to be a morning glory – although he could get a handicap mark in the 80’s which will be very difficult not to get involved in if it happens !!
However subscribers once again avoided getting involved in a another (ridiculous) gamble on a Haggas trained 3yo on seasonal reappearance. The savings we make on these are huge but of course are not reflected in the annual profits.
Once again – there will be question marks on the form of the Haggas yard but aside from Crown of Oaks the runs of Fitzmaurice and Approval were wholly predictable and of course Another Abbot on his second outing as a 3yo narrowly failed by a head to beat our gamble on Boyne Lady.
On Tuesday Itraaq makes it debut for the yard in a hot novice stakes the 3.00 at Leicester, it will be a watch and note race , taking on a very useful horse of James Fanshawe in Pina Sonata.
National Park is of interest in the Wolverhampton 7.00. But i have long been weary when Gosden and Haggas send promising horses to the same minor events, they usually win but which yard is very difficult to predict, until the markets move close to the off – don’t get fooled by early moves !!
Its unlikely to be a bet on Tuesday but i will record the Noon Update as usual and if there is a bet post on Social Media.
