Lady Bamford can afford it – but when you pay 725,000 for a yearling that cost 165,000 as a foal you should expect to get a return for your money. And whilst racing is full of horses that cost that and a lot more who can hardly raise a gallop – there was every indication on her first run that Nandita has a chance of repaying at least some of that purchase price.
She was sent off joint favourite for her debut in what has turned out to be a hot 2yo maiden at Yarmouth. The winner Gold Digger looks a lively outsider for the Queen Mary and the third placed America won next time out beating a highly touted Wathnan newcomer Fortification who was a 352,000 breeze up purchase.
I have watched the Yarmouth race several times and Robert Havlin gave Nandita a very tender introduction. Racing on the stands side away from the main pace down the centre of the track he was continually looking across at his rivals and as soon as he realised winning was not possible he stopped pushing – in the final half furlong the cameras then focused on the leaders before as they crossed the line Nandita was seen finishing really well without any sort of pressure from Havlin to finish fourth.
The Gosden’s have a 30% strike rate with 2yo’s at the track during the months of May and September and 50% with 2yo’s at the track running in May June and July rising to 66% if they have had a previous race.
Surprisingly Oisin Murphy has only ever ridden 5 horses previously for Lady Bamford and there are many jockey’s riding on Wednesday that she has jocked up on many more occasions.
The trainers of the main market rivals Roger Varian and Eve Johnstone Houghton are 0-7 and 0-9 respectively with 2yo’s at the track in the months of May June and July.
The main danger although weak in the early markets will probably be Mood Queen from the Richard Hughes yard thats in fine form and collected a 2yo novice at the track earlier this month for the same owners Sayidh Hard Spin.
This is no penalty kick but it does mean a price of around 2/1 should hold up and Nandita is taken to show considerable improvement and win at the second time of asking and get us back on track after the really disappointing run of Solar Pass who as usual for our bets was backed from 2/1 into Evs but never looked likely to win.
The writing was on the wall after a couple of furlongs when Oisin allowed Hector Crouch on the only danger Tralee Girl to dictate a slow pace without putting him under pressure.
Weds Bet Diary of a Season 2pt win Nandita 5.52 Kempton
