A frustrating day on Saturday especially with Term of Endearment which we backed at 3/1 leading everywhere before and after the line at York but beaten on the nod at 6/5. It was certainly Ed Walkers day -and the bookies – with major gambles not only on Shaha and Term of Endearment but also Shader, Audience, Munif, Breckenborough, Jasour and Al Shababi all getting beat.
Shaha was indeed the best of Gosden’s runners but ran into a huge improver in Estrange who didnt just beat Shaha she pulverised her – there is no doubt she is a Group 1 filly and we bumped into one.
Cairdeas just couldn’t handle the fast ground at York and the huge drift before the off told the story. As is the way in this game just 30 minutes later Oolong Poobang confirmed that the assessment of the Newcastle race where Cairdeas finished 4th with Oobong Poobang in 2nd was accurate when he bolted up at Haydock.
But no damage done as War Hawk backed in from the advised 4/1 bolted in to give us a profit on the day.
I was interested in Bowmark in the French Derby but the ground is reported as soft and he is no form on soft and his breeding although AW is not a problem suggests soft on turf maybe?
The last two days where we have basically broke even despite not having any luck is as important as the big winning days because the confidence remains high and the betting balances unaffected.
