Pergola not hanging around…

Its been a year when many of the Haggas 3yo’s have been slower than normal to come to hand but that won’t bother the master of Somerville Lodge for whom patience is his biggest virtue.

One such 3yo is the filly Pergola who failed to flourish and went into her first handicap off a mark of 65 which didn’t look generous and appeared to give her a lot to do against an inform 4/7 on favourite Inquisition chasing a hat trick.

That opinion looked justified in the race when Inquisition powered past Pergola inside the final 2f but Pergola put her head down and battled back to snatch an unlikely victory on the line.

This is exactly what the training methods of Haggas are designed to achieve. Now she has learned to race and battle she looks a filly to follow and with a strong pace looking likely William Buick can sit close to the pace and then use her stamina and tenacity to gain a second career win.

This looks a weaker race with no horse like Inquisition in opposition. Little Miss India having a first run for James Owen could be a danger if ready after nearly a year out but the rest of the field look class 6 rather than class 5 horses, whereas Pergola could progress to be Class 4 and looks to good for these

Over at Newbury in 6.22 the 2yo maiden Fan Me runs for the second time. She didn’t really show enough in what was a hot Newmarket maiden on debut and she maybe one for handicaps later in the season.
