Goodwood Musings

After a good day last Saturday putting it politely Saturdays generally have been bang average and returned to that level today.

When you have backed 4 horses from 6 sent to a track by one yard and the 2 you haven’t backed win the first 2 races, experience tells you to expect the worse!!!

Including the Yabher run in the last race Friday we had a run of 5 consecutive losers at the end of the Goodwood meeting, the only slight saving grace was we kept the stakes small and at least ended with a winner on the saver Gladius in the race that closed the meeting.

The story of the defeats shows that 3 of the losers Yabher, Treasure Time and Elmonjed had absolutely no chance from the track position they adopted.

Treasure Time basically had a jog around and will I am sure, given a better draw, go very close to winning a class 2 handicap this season.

Elmonjed would not have won from his low draw but found trouble throughout the race and was stopped in his run at least 4 times.

Onto Headmaster, although we were on to small stakes at 16/1 the gamble on this inexperienced horse from an opening price of 28/1 into 2/1 in a Class 2 3yo handicap rates as one of the craziest gambles i have ever witnessed.

Given the fact that his rider was having his first ride on a notoriously difficult course, it was no surprise that the money was lost after 50yds when he was squeezed out and then forced to race wide as the race evolved. The 3yo finished last !!

Finally,Term Of Endearment, who was at the last chance saloon for betting purposes but i guess the Newmarket air does not suit her as much as the air in the South East of Ireland where she was based with Henry De Bromhead until this season. She again ran at least 7lb below her best form of 2024

I somehow doubt we will see her again on these shores and she will be heading for Australia.

All in all another Saturday of drama where we again failed to star. But we live to fight another day, as we still turned a profit on the week.
