Three runners from the Haggas yard on Wednesday including the very highly regarded Pearla who will be a short price to win at the 3rd time of asking in the 6.45 at Kempton.
I also strongly fancied Ed Bethell’s A War Eagle in the 7.45, however on Monday the relaid surface baked by hot sun was very slow and tacky – it was apparent some horses simply couldn’t handle the conditions. I will give the track a wide berth until the surface has had time to bed in.
At Salisbury Wujjood goes for some black type in the Upavon Fillies stakes at 4.30 and at 6/1 is an ew bet to nothing. The short priced favourite Revoir is from the Beckett yard who continue to blow hot and cold and there seems no reason to fear the favourite who looks like a filly without a trip.
Haggas has a good record in this listed contest with 2 winners and 3 placed from 7 attempts and this improving 3yo is well worth an interest at 5/1 or better.
Recommended Bet 1pt ew Wujjood 4.30 Salisbury
Best bet of the day is Mamma Maria who reappears in the 8.25 at Ffos Las after a 280 day absence from the track. The 3yo is in the ownership Miss Yvonne Jacques whose other horse at the yard Tenability is developing into a very useful horse.
Mamma Maria was entered to run in April, so there have been issues, but don’t let the long time between races put you off. Haggas trained 3yo’s reappearing in August after a 280+ break are 6 from 11 in the past 4 years with 4 others finishing 2nd and 1 3rd.
Mamma Maria has been found a very weak race which is almost a 0-70 maiden handicap with only the 6yo Vellner having won before. She showed plenty of promise in her first 3 outings running in contests won by future Group1 placed and Listed winners. On her first two runs she was too green to show her true ability and in the 3rd over a trip of 6f which would have been too short, she ran really well behind four horses that are now rated 73, 82, 83 and 97. It was an eyecatching run and from her handicap mark off 65 she went off 9/4 favourite in a Haydock nursery, were she couldn’t handle virtually unraceable ground and then in November went off 5/4 in a Wolverhampton nursery where she ran flat and looked in need of a break.
All ten 2yo’s that ran on the AW in November and December for the yard that stayed in training and reappeared in 2025 have won.
This looks a great starting point for Mamma Maria and i expect her to win and probably follow up with 2 or 3 more. The 3/1 overnight price with Bet 365 looks very generous.
Recommended Bet Mamma Maria 3pt win 8.25 Ffos Las Wednesday
