The Haggas 3yo Klassleader has been on my radar since a very eyecatching debut in the Sandown maiden won by the Roger Charlton trained Wave Rider, who was backed overnight from 5/1 into around 9/4.
However, he drifted close to the off in the light of heavy support for his stablemate the Juddmonte owned colt Gran Descons who was backed into 5/2.
In the race Wave Rider who had previously been placed in the London Gold Cup ran out an easy winner. However, towards the back of the field making eye catching late progress was Klassleader and Gran Descons. Both horses looking likely to be suited by cut in the ground and a step in trip to 12f. The runner up Respond came out and beat a very nice Haggas colt Mukhatalif at Haydock.
Wave Rider has continued to run really well in Class 2 handicaps without getting his ideal set up. His last run behind Danger Bay is top 3yo handicap form.
Next time out in the first week in July both Klassleader and Gran Descons contested the same 12f Novice at Doncaster. Klassleader was backed into favouritism just ahead of Gran Descons.
Gran Descons just got the verdict after a tremendous battle between the two up the home straight the pair pulling 5L clear of the rest of the field.
Both horses look to be very useful staying 3yo colts and and i suspect both have been waiting for softer conditions. They were entered this weekend in races on the Turf but the continued fast ground has led them to not being declared.
However, Charlton has decided to pull the trigger with Gran Descons and goes for the 1m 4f+handicap at Newcastle off at 6.15. His mark of 88 is not lenient but I am sure along with Klassleader that he is a 90+ rated 3yo.
He is unproven on the AW which is why i am recommending a 2pt not 3pt bet and I am more than happy with the 7/2 generally available.
Recommended Bet 2pt win Gran Descons 7/2 6.15 Newcastle.
