William Haggas rarely sends out 3yo handicappers within 7 days of their previous run but does so with Mamma Maria who was disqualified when landing a 3pt bet for us on Friday evening, although we were paid out under FPP bookmakers rules.
I think she won despite the make up of the race being against her as was the case at Ffos Las on her previous win.
The field at Salisbury was reduced to five and again she found herself in front with no cover and had to grind out victory when challenged. She has been showing increasing levels of speed and the drop to 7f won’t be an issue.
Drawn in 6 of 7 with Jack Nicholls booked she will be tucked in behind what looks likely to be a strong pace and then produce her turn of foot to win in the style expected in the last two races. Remarkably she will then have the prospect of completing in effect a 4 timer at least for punters, carrying just 2lb more than her first winning mark of 67.
There is one aspect of the race that must be considered and that is the booking of Alexandra Egan on the maiden Zolder.
I have already declared a strong opinion that Alexandra will be one of the leading apprentices over the next year and she has been booked to take the ride on this 3yo who was an eyecatcher when ridden by her father John but ran poorly at Windsor on Monday and is a likely non runner
Recommended Bet 3.00 pt win Mamma Maria
Orionis is another 3yo filly heading for a Class 4 handicap the 4th runner consecutively this week fitting the profile of contesting low grade handicaps, Tom Marquand takes the ride. She fits into the category of a filly looking to add a win for paddock value rather than extend her track career. She goes to post in the 4.20 and will be favourite.
Second best in the market Perfect Craft ,on the other hand, may have more scope, she comes here in preference to heading to Haydock for a Class 2 handicap, an entry that suggests she is regarded as better than this level.
Haggas has never sent out a filly to win a 3yo+ handicap at Bath after August in the year and with Orionis put in as 9/4 favourite that stat alone is enough for me to recommend No Bet
No Recommended Bet Orionis 4.20 Bath
The week started well on Monday thanks to Hardy’s Hero, which is not a term too describe Silver Chamber who put the brakes on and ran around after hitting the front at Windsor allowing Furhaan who must have touched 200/1 in running to snatch victory on the line.
It’s going to be a very interesting week...
