Hag Tag AW Season starts Monday..

The helter-skelter flat season that is 2025 for the Haggas yard was signed off in typical fashion on Saturday. The impressive success of My Ophelia and her stablemate Earth Shot who chased her home was bettered by the return to form of Hamish, who remarkably was available at 11/2 before winning the St Simon Stakes at 7/2. Al Aasy who was sent off favourite was last beaten 70L.

Then just minutes later our only bet High Degree backed from 9/2 into 15/8 refused to settle, pulled his way to the front and was beat after 2f.

With Tom Marquand off to the Far East , Monday sees the start of the Autumn/Winter campaign for the Haggas yard. Although there are still one or two opportunities on the Turf, this time of the year is vital for the late developing 2 and 3 yo’s to gain the benefit of the patience shown to them at Somerville Lodge. It is also a period of time significant for profits.

3yo Maidens running in AW handicaps at Class 6 and 5 level are of particular interest. The best recent example is Bullet Point who Won a Class 5 Maiden handicap at Newcastle in October 2024 off a mark of 74 and 10 months later Won a Class 2 handicap at York off a mark of 100.

Here is the record of horses running on the AW between 07 October and 07 January in Class 5 and 6 handicaps moving into handicap company for either the 1st or 2nd time on the AW and no more than 3rd handicap in total. The results include all races since October 2021 and considers horses returned at 10/1 or under in the market.

2yo maidens moving into 3yo AW Handicaps after 01 January are not included.

There is a qualifier under the conditions on Monday at Newcastle with Goldie Trickett running as a maiden for the first time in an AW handicap at 7.45.

This is about as weak a race as they could find on her first run in a handicap which is worth 3,000. She cost 1.650 million euros as a yearling and getting a win next to her name is worth a small fortune, she will never get a better opportunity.

Recommended Bet 1pt win BOG 7.45 Newcastle.

At Lingfield the hard pulling Magic Box runs in the Novice Stakes at 3.05. He would probably have won at Bath had he settled last time out and could well win this if he settles. After High Degree gave us no chance of landing a gamble on Saturday because of the same fault, I am not inclined to suffer the same fete.

No Bet Recommended.
