The return of Scoville in the Class 3 Conditions Stakes 4.25 at Thirsk this Friday provides the newly gelded four-year-old with an opportunity to get a career back on track. It is a career that once looked destined for Group 1 status, following a dominant 14-length Novice Stakes victory at Newmarket on his second start last July.
The sheer scale of the “wow factor” created that afternoon is best illustrated by his subsequent start, where he went off at 4/5 to win a Group 3 at Deauville. Had he justified those odds, he would likely be a household name by now; the race was won by Sahlan, who transitioned from that victory to a Group 1 triumph in the Prix du Moulin before finishing just two lengths behind Notable Speech in a high-class Breeders’ Cup Mile.
As it turned out, the trip to France proved too much for the mental capacity of the son of Too Darn Hot. Living up to his sire’s name, he “boiled over” in both the preliminaries and the race itself, finishing tailed off.
Given the horse’s obvious raw potential, it was understandable that connections sought redemption closer to home in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes at Newmarket in October. However, the performance was only marginally better, and the inevitable gelding operation followed over the winter.
Connections have retained the faith, starting the 2026 campaign in significantly lower grade this Friday. The task remains stiff, however, as the 113-rated Poet Master also lines up and is put in as the 5/4 fav. Only after the line is crossed will we know how much ability Scoville has retained; the presence of Poet Master—who boasts an excellent record when fresh—and the fact its his first run after a break – rules out even a small investment at the 6/1 early price.
The View from Randwick
Patience remains our byword so far this season. Consequently, Dubai Honour and Caviar Heights are two other runners we will observe without a bet. Both take their chances in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick on Saturday morning.
Dubai Honour will sport first-time blinkers in an attempt to eke out the extra required to topple the latest Australian superstar filly, Autumn Glow, who remains unbeaten in all 11 of her career starts. While she steps up in trip from 1600m to 2000m (10f), the ground looks set to be fast, which may work against the Haggas-trained “warrior.” The market reflects the challenge: Dubai Honour is available at around 10/1, with Autumn Glow a restrictive 4/9.
The alarm clock will be set to watch the race live on Sky and give a big shout-out to the gallant eight-year-old.
From Saturday through to the start of the Craven Meeting on Tuesday, there are 14 horses entered—including our next significant bet. We will cover these with further updates over the next 48 hours.
