This must go down as the poorest set of Friday afternoon cards in my memory. I know the abandonment of Haydock ‘left a hole’ in the book but there are 13 Class 6 races. The attempt to put on a card of ‘higher grade’ racing at Wolverhampton in the evening always seemed bizarre and hasn’t really worked out with the best race on the card attracting only 4 runners.
Somerville Lodge is down to one runner in the fillies maiden the 6.40 at Wolverhampton and Venetian Sky has a fair chance on the basis of her run at Yarmouth. That form has a weak feel to it and I will stick to the No Bet in Novice and Maiden rule.
At Kempton on Wednesday Masked Warrior was visually impressive winning the maiden to maintain the yards ‘winner a day’ return this week. I have my doubts about the form for three reasons, especially as it will result in his handicap mark being set in the mid to high 80’s.
- Firstly his SP of 4/1 was too big for a Haggas horse expected to improve and win what was a weak maiden. He was put in at 3/1 and was easy to back right up to the off – this is simply not possible with a fancied Haggas runner.
2. Secondly, all night at the track, which was riding deep due to the hot weather, there was a big bias in favour of front runners and Tom Marquand was allowed an uncontested lead.
3. Finally, the other horses, especially the market leader, looked to be ridden with future handicap marks in mind.
There are some Somerville Lodge winners I regret not having a financial interest in but this was not one of them.
Unfortunately for her owners, we were right about Time Loop who again was sweating before the off and was unable to stay the extra 2f of the 12f handicap. She ran ok , before weakening inside the final furlong finishing 8th beaten 5l.
Summary
No Bet on Friday but a potential good betting day on Saturday.
