Somerville Lodge: Royal Ascot Best Bets 2026 As is the case with roughly 80% of wagers on horses trained by William Haggas, finding value is a constant battle. Bookmakers habitually impose a “Haggas Tax,” slashing prices simply because a horse hails from Somerville Lodge. Royal Ascot is no exception. This article provides a reality check based on 25 years of results at the five-day festival.
On three previous occasions he has trained 2 winners 2008, 2021, 2022. Royal Ascot is tough when Addeybb won the Wolferton in 2019 it ended a 5 year barren spell for Haggas at the meeting without a winner.
Haggas is currently the fifth most successful trainer in the meeting’s history with 17 winners—15 of which have come in the last 25 years. Of those 15 winners:
- 8 landed handicaps.
- 7 took Listed or Group prizes.
- Only 1 was a juvenile (Approve, 2010).
Despite these statistics, bookmakers are running scared this year, pricing the yard as if its record were on par with Ballydoyle (87 winners in 25 years). Haggas currently trains the market leader in four handicaps, and Saber Strike is likely to head the betting for the Jersey Stakes. However, a deeper dive into the data—dissecting genuine targets from “social” runners—offers some encouragement.
The Saturday Banker? By a significant margin, the Wokingham Stakes is the yard’s most successful race. When excluding runners outside the first five in the market, the record stands at two winners and three near-misses from nine runners. This year, ante-post favorite Binhareer is strongly fancied to add to that tally.
His current price as short as7/2 is exceptionally tight , but it reflects internal reports that he has been working with Group-class stablemates. In the eyes of the market, despite the fact that a field of 30 will go to post, this looks like a straight match between Binhareer and Double Rush.
Tuesday & Mid-Week Targets Valiancy is the current favorite for Tuesday’s Copper Horse Stakes, yet he will be the first Somerville Lodge horse to contest the race. Heavily “Haggas taxed” at 2/1, his price is difficult to recommend in a big-field handicap, particularly if he draws a low stall. While he is considered Group-class, value is hard to find at these odds.
Conversely, our each-way (EW) selection More Thunder in the Queen Anne is backed by historical trends. Haggas has sent seven runners to this Group 1 mile contest, yielding one winner and four placed finishers (2nd or 3rd). We recommended him at 9/2, and I expect an SP of 7/2 or shorter.
Other Notable Runners:
- Opportunity (Duke of Edinburgh): Well-fancied and follows a strong trend: two previous market leaders from the yard resulted in one win and one runner-up spot. The current 5/1 will likely drift if he receives a low draw.
- Earth Shot (Ribblesdale Stakes): The yard holds a 1-winner, 1-place record from 8 starters here. Her best price of 8/1 ante-post seems fair.
The Eye-Catcher: Alobayyah On Wednesday, Alobayyah heads the Kensington Palace Fillies’ Handicap at 5/1. She was a massive eye-catcher on her seasonal debut over this course. Last season, Tom Marquand named her his “Horse to Follow,” but she was never ‘right’ and went through the motions in her two runs in the second half of 2025.
Now running off a mark of 90, she receives over a stone from top-weight Stateira. By Ghaiyyath, she will appreciate a strong pace on fast ground and has the class to outrun her mark. She is likely to be joined by Rhapsody, who has been specifically aimed at this race since the spring.
Erasing the Nightmares of 2025 Saturday features three leading fancies looking to redeem the nightmare that was the Wokingham day of 2025.. Alongside Binhareer, Lake Forest (Jubilee) and Saber Strike (Jersey) lead the charge.
- Lake Forest (14/1): The best value currently offered for a fancied Somerville Lodge horse. Previous yard representatives in the Jubilee include runner-up Tasleet (2017).
- Saber Strike (2/1): The stats for Haggas in the Jersey are formidable: three previous well-fancied runners yielded one winner and two seconds. Expect his price to collapse further if the yard starts the week well.
Summary 2026 could be a stellar year for Somerville Lodge, with a genuine chance of training three winners at the meeting for the first time. Significantly, three of our highlighted horses are owned by Wathnan Racing, who invest upwards of £30 million annually with the specific goal of winning at Royal Ascot.
Once the draws are finalized, I will provide further updates on these eight runners, focusing on markets where 4, 5, or 6 places are available.
