Transformational Betting for 2026

Haggas in September: Not the Time to Ignore 2026 Realities.

No runners on Tuesday and no bets on Wednesday – Hardys Hero in the 20.00 at Kempton and Pierian 17.02 Bath both took big backward steps on their last outings and it is a guesswork to know if they will bounce back.

The disappointing performance of Divine Knight on Monday—who was backed as though defeat were out of the question—served as a stark reminder of the current realities at Somerville Lodge.

Pattern Class Success

The main positive this season is that the yard’s top 10 to 15 horses have largely run to form, capturing more Pattern races than usual. Somerville Lodge has secured 17 Group and Listed victories so far, compared to 10 at this stage in 2025 and 14 in 2024. While still behind the 24 recorded in 2022 (the year Baaeed claimed four Group 1s on his own), it remains a solid return at the elite level.

Maltese Cross, Almeraq, Division, Opportunity, Tenability, Division, Al Aasy, Lake Forest, Needle Match, Dubai Honour and More Thunder all with the credentials to grab further pattern race wins this autumn.

Consequently, comparing strike rates this season across divisions, makes it clear why my betting focus will shift almost exclusively toward the yard’s top-tier runners in Class 1 company.

The 2026 Older Horses (4yo+) Policy

The strategy to retain a larger squad of older horses (4yo+) has simply not paid off. A select few—OpportunityTenabilityAlobayyah, and Rhapsody (without winning) —have successfully progressed from handicaps to Listed and Group company. Beyond those four, the well has run dry.

Roughly 20 to 25 other older horses were expected to develop, win races, and potentially step out of handicaps. Yet since Royal Ascot, not a single one has managed to win above Class 3 level. As we move into autumn, none with the possible exception of Binhareer, if we get a Soft Ground Ayr Gold Cup, look capable of rectifying this position.

As a result, I have decided: except under extraordinary circumstances, I will no longer back a 4yo or 5yo from the yard in handicaps unless they have won their previous start. While I treated Divine Knight as an exception on Monday, we were extremely fortunate to escape with place money.

The July and August data makes this strategy undeniable:

  • Older Handicappers Sent to Post: 30
  • Winners: 3 (6/4, 4/9, and 4/1)
  • Strike Rate: 10%
  • Level Stakes Loss: >21 points

Underperforming Older Horses

The list of underperforming older horses is compelling. Most that started the spring with a win have since regressed. WiltshireValiancyKlassleaderFirst PrinciplePower FizzOrionisYabher, and Realign have all failed to follow up on early-season victories. Another Abbott remains the only 4yo to have won two handicaps this season.

Meanwhile, a long list of heavily backed runners have repeatedly failed to strike, several on four or five occasions:

  • Dramatic StarSea ForceDivine KnightEternal ForceBullet PointScovilleBinhareer, and Time Loop remain winless despite extreme market confidence.
  • High Degree finally scored after four defeats as a heavily backed favorite, only to be beaten again as a short-priced market leader next time out.
  • Kinswoman managed a Class 3 win, but only in a uncompetitive 4-runner field at 4/9.

2026 3yo and 2yo Performance Decline

3yo Handicappers

The 3yo handicappers have dropped off significantly during midsummer compared to last year:

  • July & August 2025: 16–60 (26.7% SR)
  • July & August 2026: 9–64 (14.1% SR)

However, filtering strictly for Class 2 handicaps yields scope for profit:

  • 2025 (Class 2): 0–16
  • 2026 (Class 2): 4–11 (36.4% SR)

Overall the record of 3yo’s in Class 2 and 3 handicaps matches or bettors previous years.

2yo Division

The 2yos are performing far below the standards set this decade. Historically, a reliable rule of thumb was to let debutants run unbacked, then capitalize on the substantial second-time out improvement typical of the yard. This year, approximately 40% of 2yos have taken a backward step on their second start.

Autumn Betting Strategy

Moving into the remainder of the season, the betting strategy will be refined from previous years:

  1. Focus Area 1: Group and Listed races (older horses & top 3yos).
  2. Focus Area 2: Class 2/3 handicaps (3yos only).
  3. Avoid: Older handicappers (unless coming off a last-time out win) and 2yo maiden/novice runners.

Despite these midseason setbacks, my portfolio remains comfortably in profit for the year. That is thanks to a strong start through to the end of May, elite stable stars delivering in Pattern races, and a disciplined significant reduction in total bets—with a heavier emphasis on advised each-way value.

The data suggests these current trends will carry into the autumn. Bets on older handicappers and 2yos—highlighted by recent disappointments like Bulletsnap and Divine Knight—will remain few and far between.
