By far the best meeting on the Flat Racing Calendar starts on Tuesday. For Somerville Lodge followers it is a meeting that generally brings one or two winners and several near misses. Historic results clearly show that it is week when Each Way betting is the best policy.
Here is a summary of the results over the past 5 years:
2025 13 Runners produced 1 winner and 2 runners up. 4 of the 13 were sent off favorite with 3 of the other 9 runners in the first 5 in the market.
The win of Merchant in the King Edward handicap was the highlight with the narrow defeats of More Thunder and Bullet Point agonizing near misses.
2024 15 runners produced 1 winner and 5 others in the frame. Only 1 was sent off favorite and 8 others in the first 5 in the market
The Wokingham win of Unequal Love was backed up by 4 of the 8 others in the first 5 in the market getting place money
2023 10 runners again 1 winner and 3 in the frame.
The winner Desert Hero was unfancied in the market. 5 of the 10 were in the first 5 in the market with 3 providing each way returns.
2022 17 runners 2 winners and 4 in the frame.
The winners were Baaeed and Candleford. 5 were sent off favorite 7 others were in the first 5 in the market with 6 returning each way money.
2021 13 runners 2 winners and 1 other placed.
The winners were Alenquer and Mohaather. 7 were in the first 5 in the market with two others returning place money.
That data proves how difficult it is to win at the meeting but also the need to be cautious. This year seems very much in line with the previous five where we have been able to show a profit over the period sticking too a staking plan of 2pt win for horses 7/2 or less and 1pt ew for bigger priced runners.
Day 1 looks likely to provide a couple of opportunities with Valiancy in the Copper Horse and More Thunder in the Queen Anne with the best chances.
Other entries include Crown of Oaks and Yabher in the Listed Wolferton Stakes. A full update to follow Sunday evening after final declarations and the draw is known.
