Wednesday threesome more hope than expectation.

I get the sense that the runners this week prior to the rain and better ground are being turned out because they need a race rather than placed with winning opportunities. That was certainly the case on Monday and the 3 on Wednesday ( 2 at Newbury) and 1 at Kempton also fit this criteria.

First to run will be the 2yo Perfect Strike in the 16.45 at Newbury ran at a trip just over 6f. On his debut at Ascot he was backed into 3/1 ( they never learn) and was very green finishing well beaten. There is zero in his pedigree to suggest either the trip or going will be in his favour on Wednesday. This looks an outing to gain experience for racing as a 3yo. I would expect the 5/1 opening price to drift

In the 3yo handicap that closes the card at 7.30 Guesstimate is kept to 10f having looked ready for a step up to 12f on her staying on 2nd behind She Commands at Lingfield. She is related to the Ascot Gold Cup winner Estimate on the dams side.

As she has already won her Novice – this could well be a holding run for more experience waiting for a more suitable race on better ground over further. The initial 13/2 is about right.

The appropriately named Evening Fades wraps up the day in the Kempton finale at 8.50. Her owner/breeder will be very keen to get a win out of her and under an inspired ride by Harry Davies almost pulled it off at Wolverhampton on her latest outing. That was an inferior race to this contest and she was sent off 18/1.

I can’t see her improving sufficiently to get the win in this higher grade. I would expect her opening price of 13/2 to drift.
