Sea La Rosa duly obliged to provide Somervile Lodge with a 2nd 2yo winner of the week. Her win was in only a moderate 3 runner Newcastle maiden but her breeding is such that any win is of considerable value in the paddocks.
It will be a surprise if she doesn’t progress to be a black type filly as a three year old.
This week will see a fair number of unraced juveniles take their first steps alongside a few more established youngsters that have the potential to win before the end of the season.
The only one of the four runners that fits that criteria on Wednesday is Alannah Bananah who reappears in the opening Kempton maiden. I am never keen to back a Haggas runner in a fillies maiden at this track and although she showed promise last time out I think a trip in excess of a mile is what she needs and this 7f contest looks a good stepping stone for handicaps as a 3yo.
It’s a completely different story on Wednesday with the other horses Haggas puts out each is fully exposed and in search of a reputation boost. In the Newmarket 15.35 Under Arrest is sent out just 48 hours after lacking pace over a mile at Pontefract. He is pitched in to action again this time over a more suitable 10f but he has only a small chance in a race that looks tougher than Mondays contest. He heads to the sales next week.
Proposal runs in the fillies handicap at 16.10. She is a horse that I have been against all season and the set up of this doesn’t suit her. She is best passing tiring horses in big fields – a set up that is the reverse to what she faces on Wednesday.
Cieren Fallon heads to Kempton also to ride Fast Performer in the Nursery at 18.30 . She was expected to win well at Carlisle on her last outing but threw her toys out of the pram and never took any interest in racing. In the past because it’s a Haggas trained horse I have given horses like her a second chance. It has generally been an error of judgement and I have taken the view more recently to completely rule out horses like Fast Performer for betting purposes.
It all adds up to another day of watch and wait for the future.
