Somerville Lodge, as we predicted last weekend has had very little activity on the track this week and from an initial entry of four, just a single runner heads to post on Friday. Bintsaleh, having her third start is the mount of Tom Marquand in the 10f Novice Stakes the 4.10 at Sandown.
She ran a race full of promise at Yarmouth on her seasonal reappearance but maidens at the Esher track are usually used mainly for ‘educational purposes’-the Somerville Lodge record in ‘maiden and novice’ events at Sandown Park is 0-9 since 2015. By direct comparison the John and Thady Gosden record since 2021 is 4 from 17, 9 from 33 since 2015.
The Gosden win ratio is fully expected to be increased, in a high quality contest, the field includes Sunshine Star who is reported to be another Group quality filly for the Gosden team, and she will, I am told, more than justify her Oaks entry. Bintsaleh should run well and get her handicap mark.
The card at Sandown although attracting smallish fields is filled with expectation and clues for the season and offers some great viewing. The Gosden team are flying and my contacts in the yard fully expect them to have a stellar day on Friday with Organise in the 1.50 and Field of Gold in the Bet 365 mile at 3.00 expected to be the first two legs of a treble completed by Sunshine Star. They would not be at all surprised if Devils Advocate in the 2.25 and Wise Prince 3.35 left the bookmakers gasping for air by featuring in a Clarehaven five timer.
With most of the high profile teams now getting into full swing – there is no doubt the Haggas yard will be very keen to start hitting top form. However, the long established patterns with maidens and novices is not going to change because of a slow start to the season. The small number of runners this week is testament to this and I am sure the patience will be rewarded.
