Fillies take centre stage on Friday.
The 7f handicap that opens the Ascot card on the 2 day May Ascot meeting on Friday is a handicap that is regularly targeted by Somerville Lodge.
The full details of the yards record in the race speaks volumes for the chances of Albaydaa on Friday.
Haggas has sent 6 runners to contest the race in the last 10 years – 3 have won 2 were placed 2nd and 3rd and the only one out of the money finishing 6th was Original Choice who needed further than 7F.
That 50% strike rate makes the 4/1 on offer about Albaydaa excellent value, especially as her eye catching run at Newmarket over 6f suggested she needed this 7f trip and would improve for the race. Three others are at the head of the market, Coleri Forever, May Queen and Queen Tamara. The first two have to give nearly a stone to the Haggas filly and Queen Tamara is from the Harry Charlton yard that has not sent out a winner for over 3 months.
If you are a punter that likes insurance the 4/1 in a 10 runner field merits an EW bet – however Albaydaa was close to being a 3pt win bet and I have backed her at 4/1 as a 2pt bet.
Cieren Fallon is on duty at Wolverhampton for two rides. The Wathnan filly Silver Lake tackles the fillies maiden at 7.30 and he begins in the 0-60 12f handicap on board the slow burner Caraway. The 3yo filly is progressing very slowly but offered a glimmer of hope when finishing a staying on 4th over course and distance in slightly higher grade.
The form of the race has worked out really well with the winner going in again and Forever Perfect who was 3rd finishing 1st and 2nd in her two subsequent outings. That filly reposes on Friday evening on 8lb worse terms and with any further improvement Caraway should be too good for her.
There are several other horses in the field that have scope for improvement but I expect Caraway to be ridden far more prominently by the top form Fallon – the filly is no forlorn hope and is worth a 1pt Bet
The maiden contested by Silver Lake features a field of well bred fillies all of whom can be expected to improve with racing. Silver Lake will be towards the head of the market but this looks a race to watch without a bet.
